Information for Parents about Language Boost Provision / Gwybodaeth i Rieni am Hwb Ieithyddol

If your child has been offered a place at the Welsh Immersion Unit for a Language Boost, you may be asking some of these questions:

What is a Language Boost and how will my child benefit?

A language boost course is recommended to Year 1 pupils and older who attend the county's primary schools who need additional support to acquire the language or need to develop more confidence to speak Welsh. A teacher or Headteacher at your child's school will have referred your child to us. Pupils will benefit from being in small classes with smaller numbers than in mainstream schools and with a staff ratio of 1:6 in the primary class.

A carefully structured cross-curricular scheme of work is provided by specialist staff through various language immersion methods and fun experiences to develop language, e.g. playing board games and interactive digital games, role playing and acting, moving and singing. Our focus is on speaking and listening and an appropriate level of Welsh reading and writing will be taught.

How much time will my child spend at the Welsh immersion unit?

Pupils who receive a language boost will spend Monday to Thursday at the Welsh Immersion unit and every Friday in their registered schools for a term.

Will my child miss out on Sports Day and school trips during their time at the Welsh Immersion Unit?

Pupils attending the Welsh immersion unit are given equal opportunities to take part in special events held in their registered schools e.g. Christmas Concerts, Sports etc. You will need to inform the Welsh Immersion staff of any such events at your child's registered school.

How will my child get to the Welsh Immersion Unit every day?

Transport is provided free of charge by the Local Education Authority from home using school transport contractors.

What can my child have for lunch at the Welsh Immersion Unit?

Pupils are expected to bring a healthy mid-morning snack and a packed lunch to the unit with them every day and school lunch is provided for children who receive free school meals.

What should my child wear to the Welsh Immersion Unit?

Pupils who attend the Welsh immersion unit are expected to wear school uniform and follow the school uniform rules of their registered school.
